Community & Belonging
A Place to Belong
At Light’s Hope, we don’t begin with belief, we begin with belonging. Whoever you are, whatever you carry, however you arrive: this is a place where you can breathe.
Our welcome is wide: for those who are LGBTQIA2+, neurodivergent, disabled, questioning, healing from church hurt, or who never believed at all. For the ones who walked away from religion, and the ones who never set foot inside. You don’t need to fit a mould to sit at the table here.
Our ethos is simple: faith is a journey, not a gate to be passed through. Doubt is not a barrier, and certainty is not a requirement. Every story has weight, every voice deserves to be heard. We make room for questions, for difference, for slow steps and bold leaps alike.
- Support is not an afterthought. We hold each other in practical, tangible ways:
- Pastoral care that is compassionate, inclusive, and grounded in clear boundaries.
- Safeguarding that runs through every layer of our life together.
- Small groups and peer networks that create spaces of trust and encouragement.
- Mentoring and training that helps people grow into ministry without losing themselves.
Our culture is carried in how we worship, how we talk, how we plant new communities. It is carried in laughter, in honesty, in the way we refuse secrecy or shame. It is carried in the way we say you are safe here, and then prove it.
This is who we are: a community rooted in welcome, growing in hope, walking side by side. Whoever you are, however you come, you are welcome and you belong.
Support & Care
Belonging isn’t just about Sunday gatherings. It’s about being carried and celebrated in the everyday. That might mean prayers when life feels heavy, shared meals when times are tough, laughter when good news comes, or simply being a listening ear when it’s needed.
Safeguarding is part of that belonging. It isn’t only about children or people who fit a category of “vulnerable.” Safeguarding is for everyone. Every person who comes into our community deserves to be safe, respected, and protected from harm. We follow best practice and external training, not just because it’s required, but because it’s the right thing to do. True welcome means safety, and safety is everyone’s right.
Exploring Faith Together
You don’t need certainty to join in. We believe faith grows best when it’s explored together, with room for questions and space for doubt. That can look like small groups, online meet-ups, coffee conversations, or simply honest chats between friends.
Jesus welcomed questions and stories, not polished statements of belief. In the same way, we welcome your questions, your searching, even your scepticism. Whether you’re curious, cautious, returning after a long break, or never thought you’d step into church, you are welcome to explore here.
Training & Leadership
Some people discover a call to serve in ministry, and when they do, we walk with them. We provide a pathway for training and leadership that is open, supportive, and inclusive. Whether someone becomes a curate, in training, a deacon focused on care and outreach, or a priest leading worship and teaching, the call is always the same: to serve with compassion, not to gatekeep.
Our training is designed so people can step into leadership as their whole selves, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, disabled, from any background, any culture, any path, any faith. We believe ministry is about honesty, courage, and care. No one is asked to hide who they are in order to lead.
Planting New Churches
We don’t believe Jesus’ welcome should be confined to certain places or certain people. Where communities don’t have a space like this, we help new ones grow.
Every church plant is unique. Some meet in halls, others in cafés, houses, or online. Each reflects the gifts and needs of the people who gather there. What they share is the same heartbeat: open doors, open table, a place where everyone belongs and can explore faith safely and honestly.
Next Steps
Everyone’s pace is different. Some people join quietly, staying on the edges until they’re ready. Others dive straight in. Some will go on to lead, others simply belong. All of it matters.
Jesus welcomed people as they were and walked with them at their pace. We do the same. Whether you’re here to dip a toe in, to heal from past hurts, to find family, or to grow in faith, you are part of the story.
Light’s Hope is currently governed by a Church Committee who are responsible for ensuring the Church is led with integrity, accountability, and transparency. The Committee oversees safeguarding, finance, equality, and inclusion, and supports the life of our Churches and ministers.
We are committed to strong governance that protects people, resources, and vision, and to open reporting through our Annual General Meeting and published policies.

Transparency, through clear decision making, open policies, and published information. Inclusivity, ensuring equality, accessibility, and respect in all decisions. Safeguarding, placing the protection of all people at the centre of Church life.
- Appointment and Independence
- Committee members are appointed through the Governance Pathway of the Church.
- The Committee will include at least three members, with a majority being unrelated.
- Related members may serve, provided decision making remains balanced and accountable.
- Ministers may serve on the Committee but must step aside from decisions where there is a personal conflict of interest, including matters of pay or expenses.
- Committee members normally serve three year terms, renewable by re-appointment.
- Oversight and Meetings
- The Church Committee will meet at least three times per year, alongside an Annual General Meeting.
- Quorum, voting, and procedures are set out in the Constitution.

- Breaches of duty, safeguarding failures, or serious misconduct are grounds for removal from the Committee.
- Conflicts of interest must be declared and recorded.
- The Complaints and Whistleblowing Policy provides safe and confidential routes for raising concerns about governance or leadership.
Transition to Trusteeship
As Light’s Hope grows and formal charitable structures are established, the Church Committee will transition into a Board of Trustees. This policy will be updated at that time to reflect trustee governance in line with UK charity law.
Review
This policy will be reviewed annually by the Church Committee to ensure governance remains strong, transparent, and aligned with both UK law and the vision of Light’s Hope.
