Jesus never waited for people to come find him in a synagogue — he went to the places where peopJesus never waited for people to come find him in a synagogue, he went to the places where people lived and worked, ate and wept, celebrated and struggled. In the same way, we believe the church belongs not only in Sunday worship but in the everyday: homes, hospitals, schools, care homes, workplaces, prisons, and communities.
Chaplaincy, pastoral care, ministry to the sick, and visits to schools are all part of how we live out that calling. They are about presence, listening, dignity, and compassion. Whoever you are, wherever you are, our promise is the same: you are not alone.
Pastoral Care
Pastoral care is simply the work of being present with people in real life. It might mean listening without judgement when someone feels overwhelmed, sitting in silence with someone who can’t find words, celebrating joys like new beginnings, or offering prayer when asked. Sometimes it’s a phone call, a cup of tea, or walking with someone through a tough season.
We don’t come with neat answers or tidy solutions. We come as companions who believe that the love of Jesus meets us in the middle of life as it is. That love gives people dignity, hope, and the assurance that their story matters. Pastoral care is not reserved for those who attend services, it is open to anyone who seeks it, regardless of background, belief, or past experience with church.
Chaplaincy
Chaplaincy is one way of making that pastoral care visible in wider society. Our chaplains serve in hospitals, schools, care homes, workplaces, and other community spaces. They are there for everyone, not just those who call themselves Christian.
A chaplain’s role is to listen, support, and walk with people in whatever they are facing. For some that might mean prayer, for others it is simply the comfort of knowing someone is willing to sit with them in difficulty. Chaplaincy reminds us that God’s presence is not confined to a church building but is found in the middle of daily life, in classrooms, hospital wards, break rooms, and beyond.
School Visits
Schools are some of the most important places in our communities, and we count it a privilege to be invited into them. Our ministers and chaplains visit schools to lead assemblies, support staff, and spend time with children and young people.
We approach this work with care and sensitivity. Our visits are never about pushing belief, but about offering encouragement, answering questions honestly, and helping children explore big ideas like kindness, justice, hope, and community. We believe every child deserves to know they are valued, loved, and capable of making a difference.
Ministering to the Sick
When someone is unwell, whether at home, in hospital, or in hospice care, we believe the church has a special calling to be close. We offer prayer, anointing with oil, and Communion for the sick, but more than that, we offer presence: time spent, hands held, listening hearts.
We don’t claim to have cures or easy words, but we believe Jesus meets people in suffering with deep compassion. To sit with someone in their illness is to witness that love. Ministry to the sick is open to all, whether or not someone has been part of church before. It is about honour, care, and the reminder that no one faces illness or death alone.
Our Commitment
In all of this, pastoral care, chaplaincy, school visits, or ministry to the sick, our commitment is the same: to carry the compassion of Jesus into the heart of daily life. We don’t come as experts with all the answers. We come as companions willing to listen, pray, encourage, and walk with people in whatever season they are facing.
We take safeguarding seriously in every setting, because real care must always be safe care. Every person we meet deserves to be respected, protected, and treated with dignity.
