Our History

Light’s Hope began with a simple but urgent question: what if church could be different?

For too long, too many people had been told there was no place for them. LGBTQIA2+ people, neurodivergent people, disabled people, those who had deconstructed their faith, those carrying wounds from church, and those who never believed in the first place — all were often made to feel like outsiders. The words “all are welcome” rang hollow when welcome stopped at the door.

In 2018, the work began. What started as prayer and conversation slowly grew into a movement: a denomination built on the Anglican way, but shaped for today. Rooted in tradition, yet freed from the systems of exclusion and gatekeeping that had so often silenced people.

Much of our early journey was spent inside the Church of England, trying to imagine what renewal could look like from within. But over time, it became clear: if we wanted a church where everyone truly belonged, we would need to step outside the old structures. The Church of England carried a rich heritage — shared prayer, the sacraments, the wisdom of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason — but its leadership too often chose caution over courage. The doors were not opening wide enough.

So we carried the best of Anglican life with us and left behind what no longer served the Gospel of inclusivity. We honoured the rhythm of prayer and Communion, the sacraments at the heart of church life, the grounding of scripture and tradition. But we also made space for voices too often unheard, the marginalised, the excluded, those who were never asked to the table.

The years that followed were not quick or easy. Between 2018 and 2025, we spent seven years shaping foundations: writing policies that placed safeguarding at the heart of community, creating ordination and training pathways that affirmed leaders in their whole selves, and building a vision for planting churches where welcome was needed most. Each step was shaped by the same conviction — Jesus never turned people away, and neither would we.

Now, seven years on, Light’s Hope stands as a new Anglican denomination: independent of the Church of England, but deeply rooted in the Anglican way but in a more progressive, inclusive and accessible way for modern life. We carry forward the prayers, sacraments, and rhythm of tradition — but in a way that is inclusive to all, without exception.

Our history is not just about what we left behind. It is about what we are building: a growing network of churches committed to belonging, compassion, justice, and joy. We are still young, still learning, but already living out what we once only dreamed of: communities where whoever you are, however you come, you are welcome.
